What We Love About Playa del Rey
We love Southern California. The breezy oceanside town of Playa del Rey is conveniently positioned within just a short commute to our El Segundo and Torrance locations.
Playa del Rey, which means “King’s Beach,” is a coastal neighborhood located within the City of Los Angeles. The area’s rolling hills are the result of ancient, wind-blown, compacted sand dunes above sea level, originally called and often referred to as The Del Rey Hills or "The Bluffs". These dunes run parallel to the coastline from Playa del Rey all the way south to Palos Verdes.
Playa del Rey boasts a gorgeous twenty-mile stretch of beach. In the 1950s and early ‘60s, it was thought of as the greatest surfing spot in LA, but, over time, erosion has negatively affected the waves. However, the beach at the northernmost end of Playa del Rey is still a great spot to hang ten, and it’s known as Toes Over Beach.
The neighborhood is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, Marina del Rey and Ballona Creek to the north, Ballona Wetlands and Playa Vista to the northeast, Westchester to the east, Los Angeles International Airport and El Segundo to the south. Like most of the California beach towns, Playa del Rey has an outdoor culture driven by days at the beach, enjoyment of outdoor activities, and the always buzzing Westchester Park.
The area caters to the existing environment and to non-pedestrian traffic. A bridge that connects Playa del Rey to the jetty between Ballona Creek and the marina is only open to foot and bicycle traffic. Crew teams from UCLA and LMU both practice on Ballona Creek channel. The southernmost portion of Playa del Rey, formerly populated but now vacant, is a protected habitat of an endangered species, the El Segundo Blue Butterfly.
